A few years ago a revolution occurred in the world of professional audio speakers. It began in recording studios and spread to the concert stage. That revolution involved building active electronics and precision amplifiers directly into the speakers. Prior to this speakers had a separate amplifier, which often did not match their specific characteristics. Speakers also required all kinds of crossover networks to try make frequency response flat with minimal phase distortion.

The same revolution has continued with home theater speakers. Some of the same companies that make state-of-the-art speakers for recording studios now make wonderful speakers for home use as well. The amplifiers are built right in to the speakers, matching the exact requirements of that specific speaker for exceptional sound quality.

Powered speaker systems range from a simple pair of stereo speakers up to full surround sound systems with sub woofers. There are little speakers you could pack along on vacation that will fill a small room with beautiful, articulate sound. And there are larger systems that will fill the largest living room or theater space with incredible depth and projection of sound.
